Having a word of the year can be a powerful tool. We are starting not only a new year, but a new decade. If you have never chosen a word to define your year, this is the time!
Definition of Your Word of the Year
What do you want this year to look like? How do you want it to differ from this past year? What are your goals?
These are important questions to ask yourself as you are deciding on your word. Last year I needed more than a word. So I have a phrase. I choose, “out of my comfort zone”. I wanted to do things that were terrifying, but life changing. Things that might not be big to other people, but huge to me. My year began with signing up for a bloggers retreat. My year ended with me signing up for an administrator’s training at the Ron Clark Academy. Last year I would have never been brave enough to sign up for this. But next week I will be headed to Atlanta to train at the Ron Clark Academy.
I used my word to keep me going. I knew what the Webster’s definition of the word was, but I needed to know what MY definition of the word is. This will help guide you throughout the year.
Picking Your Word of the Year
It can be a daunting task. Picking one thing that is going to be your focus for all of 2020. As we enter a new year and decade, decide what you want it to look like. What do you want to accomplish, overcome, or succeed at? How do you want to change or do differently this year? Why do you want these things in your life?
Answering these questions will help narrow down what your focus truly is. Ask yourself what is the most important thing you want for this coming year. Determine what word embraces that.
Surround Yourself with Your Word
Whatever you choose to be your word, let it become your mantra. Surround yourself with it. How I am doing that this year is several ways.
I purchased a My Intent Kit (a punch kit) to use with my child care staff. In doing that I will be able to create jewelry pieces with my word one it. Sometimes just seeing that will help keep you on track and motivated.
Seeing is believing. One of my DIYs is to make a sign for home and work featuring my 2020 word. We need reminders and this will help me in both places I spend the majority of my time.
Journaling is a huge help for me. Being able to write things down, track and document have been life savers. I ordered a traveler’s notebook with my word and the definition on the front. I will use my journal to track all the ways I am following my goals.
What ways can you surround yourself with your word?
My Word of the Year
So, you might be asking what I have chosen this year, this new decade.
I want to live my life on purpose and with purpose. I want to live intentionally. My word of the year is Intentional. This means every decision I make, thing I buy will come with a plan, a purpose, a reason. No more doing things blindly, purchasing things just to have.
Having intention makes you have to stop and think about what you want in your life and is what you are doing moving toward your intended life.
What’s Your Word
How will you define your incoming year? What will it look like? Write it down, think about it. There’s no rule that says your word has to be set by the first or really any date. Take your time, decide and live it!
