One thing most families all have in common is a family calendar. This is usually part of the family’s Command Center. In our home, for many years, this was a dry erase calendar in our kitchen and a paper planner on my desk in the dining room. How did family members add events, appointments, etc.? Lots and lots of sticky notes. This is clearly not the best way to manage a family of 5’s schedule.
This Christmas, I received a Skylight Frame from my children. I was so excited and immediately set up my account. When I did this, I discovered that they also had a calendar! I read about it and did my research and determined this was perfect for my family.
Everything seems to be going digital. In the past, my family tried an online calendar. While in theory it was a good idea, some how, a physical calendar seems to be a necessity. Even though we were trying an online option, our dry erase calendar was still our go-to space for merging our schedules.
Looking at what Skylight Calendar could do for my family, I knew that it was the right choice for us.
Our family dynamics have changed over the past two years. The original nuclear family of five is now a family of three in the home and two in their own homes. Our son is in the Air Force and stationed 8 hours away, our daughter lives close and works for us and our youngest still lives in the home. We try to have family game nights and get togethers. In order to do this ,we need to know everyone’s schedule. Our son works different shifts that changes regularly. It’s nice to know when he’s available for phone calls.
The Skylight Calendar allows all family members to add their own events to the calendar through Google Calendar. This allows members that are far away to add schedules easily. The calendar has it’s own email address. Family members simply invite the Skylight Calendar address to any event they want added.
It fits perfectly in our Command Center. It is roughly the size of a Kindle Fire or an iPad. You can sit it on a table or desk or mount it on the wall. We chose to mount it, as it is easier to access and see. The only issue we have found with mounting it, the off button is on the back. You have to remove it from the wall to turn it off. (You don’t HAVE to turn it off, but we do at night)
There is also a grocery list function that is very helpful. Our Command Center is right by the kitchen. This allows me to quickly add to the grocery list. You can also access this list online through the app. Family members can also add to the grocery list.
How can this calendar work for you? No matter what ages you have or dynamics of your family, this can be a great tool.
#1- It keeps families connected. Even though our family isn’t physically together, we are able to know each other’s schedules. This means we can better plan family activities and maintain relationships.
#2- Allows younger members to take responsibility. For those with younger children, you can add daily, weekly and monthly tasks for them to check. They can easily see what needs to be done and when. it also allows them to add items to the grocery list when they finish an item or realize there is a need.
#3- Create consistency in schedule. Make it a habit to check your Skylight Calendar every day. Know your schedule. Never miss an appointment. Stay on task.
#4- Color Coding– I talked about color coding your family. You can color code your calendar with each family member. With just a glance, you will know who has something due.
#5- NO MORE STICKY NOTES! If you are like me, you have sticky notes with dates here there and everywhere. How many have you lost? I know I have missed appointments or forgotten someone had an event because I misplaced my sticky note. Now you simply input things online or have the family member add their event online. Simple!
Who Needs This Calendar?
Everyone! I’m not kidding! All kinds of families will find this a great addition. Families with young children (lots of activities) teens ( even more activities), military families (distance), homeschoolers ( I WISH we had this earlier!) and even empty nesters! It is the best of both worlds. You have a digital calendar which can be accessed online but also a concrete version that is easily displayed any where.
Businesses could use this for employee schedules, work schedules and other events. I am certainly planning to add one for my child care center.
How will you use YOUR Skylight Calendar?
