Memory keeping is a tricky thing. What do you keep? How do you keep it? Where do you keep it? There is scrapbooking, pictures, memory books, so many options. That’s what makes memory jars so great! They are both functional (memory keeping) and decorative (fun things in a jar!).
I discovered memory jars last year and tried it out. I haven’t had the time to invest in going back over the years to make past years jars. 2019 is the first year I collect items all year.
How to Start
First, decide what kind of jar you would like to use to collect memories all year. There are so many choices! Just head over to your local Hobby Lobby, Michael’s or favorite craft store. Or, do like I did, and score these 4 chalkboard labeled jars at an antique store.
Be sure to choose a jar large enough to hold the memories you plan to keep for the year. I decided to keep things such as movie stubs, pins, clips, bands/bracelets, anything small to commemorate things we do over the next year.
Where to Memory Keep
Location, Location, Location. That’s right. Just like property, where you put your memory keeping jar is important. It needs to be visible to all family members. This way they know where to drop off their memories. Display it proudly where visitors can get a peek at your fun memory keeping!
At the end of the year, you will transfer your memories to a permanent jar. In that jar you can add written notes about the memories, dates, etc. Label the outside of your jar with the date and display it any where!
You could have a whole shelf of past years, you could display them near photos on the wall, the possibilities are endless!
Memory Jars for One Event
Sometimes you will have lots of memories to keep from a major event. This could be a vacation, sports season, club activites, etc.
You can store these memories in separate jars and be sure to label them. I have found that we had lots of memory jars with shells and sand. I had to label which beach, trip and year they were from.
These could be displayed in the family member’s bedroom (sports, clubs, etc) for them to enjoy. Family vacation jars would be fun next vacation pictures to give them the full effect. Think of memory jars as the new vacation videos. You don’t have to bore your friends with tons of vacation photos and videos. Instead they can check out a few pictures and the trinkets that go along with the trip.
When my son got his first job, he would occasionally bring flowers home to me. He was very proud that he was able to do that on his own. I always kept and dried a few of the flowers from each bouquet. On the other hand, my husband is not a flower guy. He will buy me flowers, but the kind you put in the yard. Don’t get me wrong, I love those, since I get to enjoy them much longer. But, he did recently surprise me with a bouquet for a candle light dinner at home. I of course saved part of that bouquet.
How do you memory keep flowers? I found perfect jars with clear lids at Hobby Lobby. I cut down the flowers to fit and slip them inside. They are both pretty and functional. This makes them great to display anywhere!
What Memories Will You Keep?
Are you bursting with ideas of jars to fill? Are you already collecting things as we speak? One of my favorite jars that I have seen was a mom of several boys collecting items left in their pockets in the laundry. That could go for husbands, daughters, anyone really. I know for me you’d get plenty of Burt’s Bees chapsticks or hair elastics!
